If you are profe, sure as I've suffered or will suffer voice problems. It seems to be something that is implied in our profession, but no one stops to think that this may be a serious problem or what consequences can have long-term.
According to an article published in Medical Journal, the 22% of teachers suffer from voice problems. Further, according to this article, it is women who suffer most such disorders, being the most common functional dysphonia among us.
But, what is functional dysphonia? I think it is important for us to be truly aware of the problem and provide the means to address it., let's properly define the terms.
Aphonia: It is a voice disorder at its maximum degree, complete loss of voice, no sound can be made.
Dysphonia: voice disorders that deviate in some way from normal, that is to say, the disorders that you may have had, or myself. Inside the dysphonia, we can differentiate between:
- Functional dysphonia: the cause of the disorder is not evidently found within the components of the larynx and among them the vocal cords.
- organic dysphonia: when injury is seen inside the larynx, found mainly in the vocal cords. The most common injuries are: nodules, polyps, edema, cysts and various laryngitis.
Obviously, Voice disorders are not only due to an abuse of this, To this are also added personal factors such as eating habits., tobacco consumption, way of speaking, etc.
In any case, If it is true that the International Labor Organization (OIT) considers teachers as the first professional category at risk of contracting occupational voice diseases, Because the type of voice most likely to damage the vocal organs is the “projected voice.”, that is to say, the one that we regularly use to communicate with our students and the one that is used to exert an influence on people, calling them, trying to persuade them, etc.
In fact, in Spain, “Vocal cord nodules as a consequence of sustained efforts of the voice for professional reasons” are the only pathology recognized as an occupational disease of the teaching community..
Having said this, What can we do to avoid voice problems?
I have prepared a small infographic for you with 10 advice from specialists to prevent them.

Some pills called Eucalyptus complex work very well for me and they soften my throat.. In my case at the end of a morning with 4 the 5 hours of class I have noticed a great improvement with them. They sell them in herbal stores.
Thank you very much Joaquin!
I'm sure many teachers will find them great..
A hug,
Cristina
Thank you very much Cris for this post.,
and if you leave me… I leave you some more advice, since I have suffered from nodules.
It is not recommended to speak in a whisper
Nor take candies that contain mint, mentholation, eucalyptus or similar, since we think it softens us but it dries us out more.
Do not drink drinks either very cold or very hot
And learn to use diaphragmatic breathing.
Thank you for all your posts that help us so much every day.
Thank you very much Nuria!
We take note of the advice that I think is very practical and useful.
Surely with what we are all seeing we will not be left without a voice again 😉
Thank you, I am suffering from this illness right now, I have more than a month, hasn't been to the doctor yet , I'm going to take that precaution, I sometimes use a tone of voice that is beyond my ability to explain. ,
But I'm going to take more precautions for my voice and I have to go to the doctor. .
Clear! It is important that you go to the doctor to rule out anything serious..
Much encouragement!
I'm not a teacher, but I talk out of my mouth and also with my 3 girls I spend the day telling you things and singing (and some screams) and from time to time I completely lose my voice. And they recommended that I grate a carrot and marinate it with honey and then drink the syrup that was made at night before going to bed., In addition to being very tasty, the next day the voice is better. From experience.
I hope it helps the teachers.
A hug.
Thank you very much Blanca!
I take note 😉 and also, carrot and honey, as you say, It must be very delicious 🙂
Thanks for the advice!
