There are many times when I talk to friends, family or parents of my students, of the ingredients that make a child into an adult successful future. They are also many occasions when I've talked about these kinds of issues in the blog, and usually one of the conclusions that I get is always the creativity.

Have not you ever wondered what happened to that school friend who always got outstanding?, What is now devoted?, You have changed the world? Have you done something great? Perhaps you know a case of classmates highlighting then and they do now, but in my case, and in the case of most people I know, It is not like this. Have not you ever wondered why?

The other day I came across an article in the New York Times that talked about this topic. Today I would like to share with you the conclusions it reaches that article.

If you are profe, in your class have one or more children are a reflection of perfection: with 4 and 5 years already read, They feel good, They help their peers, They begin to control a second language, They make simple calculations mentally and more. His parents are orgullosísimos of them and the rest of mortals envy them because they do not have to fight every day and with their children to read, They feel to do homework, etc. They are children who the teachers alagamos, we sample and "used" to help the rest of his teammates. Having children in class and is a blessing because it makes everything much easier, but, What happens when these children grow? Will they still be a model for the rest?

In the United States have the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, one of the most prestigious science awards to students of secondary education grants. It is considered the Super Bowl of science and since its inception in 1942 And till 1994 rewarded more than 2000 teens. The amazing thing about these data is that only a 1% of these teenagers ended at the National Academy of Sciences, and only eight won a Nobel Prize ...

It is quite rare for child prodigies become geniuses who changed the world as adults. We assume that this is because these children are missing a number of key social and emotional characteristics to achieve success. But actually, These children have no emotional or social problem, in fact, less than one quarter of child prodigies have trouble relating. Then, Why they stay on the road?

The main problem that does not go far do not learn to be original. What worries these children is to earn the admiration of their parents and teachers. This leads them to continue working and constantly striving to be better, but not to be different or do something different.

Normally prodigies play pieces of music incredibly, but they never make up their own. They are children who focus all their efforts on consume information and existing knowledge, but do not develop their own.

This studio suggests that normally, the most creative children are not the favorites of teachers, which it makes many do not communicate their creative ideas, the start to "save" for themselves and end up becoming a "little sheep" more.

According to this article, most notably children will become good professionals in their sector and, possibly, leaders within their organizations. But a small percentage will be creators. Most of these children continue to apply what they are taught to do better: do your best work, without departing from the scheduled road, always seeking recognition from others, small of their parents and teachers, ahead of their bosses, and so all his life.

These children will be great doctors, but they do nothing to improve the system. They are good teachers, but they will not try to change an education system that does not work. They are great lawyers who will defend their clients swashbuckling, but will not try to change unjust laws.

The question is then, How should we raise and educate a child to be a creative child?

This studio compared to families that are considered creative and those families who are not.

One of the main differences between these families, It is that those families that are considered "non-creative", They have an average of 6 house rules, schedules related to the duties and time to go to bed, while those families considered creative has an average of less than one rule.

There is no doubt that creativity is difficult to teach, but what if easy is frustrate. The main problem of having a large number of rules is that we are limiting children to think for themselves and make their own decisions. This does not mean licentiousness. Parents who educate creative children more emphasis on moral values in the rules and prohibitions. In what should and should not do, and based on that let the child take their "own" decisions.

It does not mean that parents of children creative not encourage them to achieve excellence and success. What it means is that especially encourage them to seek pleasure in their work, to enjoy it and do what they like. They are children that space is left to investigate and discover their own interests, and this is what will prepare them to be creative adults.

The psychologist Benjamin Bloom led a study in investigating the origin of many musicians, artists, athletes and scientists. He learned that his parents had never raised them to make them superstars. They were not "sergeants" that made them rehearse for hours. What they all had in common is that they had developed intrinsic motivation in their children, and when children had shown an interest in a particular activity, then they had supported them unconditionally undertake to make.

Many of the teachers were not professional pianists elite. Many of these pianists received his first classes with teachers who lived nearby and made them learn in a fun way. Mozart began to show interest in music before starting to teach.

Then, What is the way? From my point of view and, by way of conclusion, I think the fundamentals in the early years of life is let the kids discover the world through their own eyes and not ours. That does not mean that we should inculcate the hard work and effort, but they let think for themselves.

A big mistake many parents is to educate their children as they think they would like to have brought to them. They educate them to become what they would like to have been, not to be what they want to be. Therefore, if you want to educate a creative children ... let it be!

Thanks for being there!
