This week I count with a very special collaboration on the blog. I had wanted to talk about nutrition for a long time and its importance in the development of children, but obviously it's not my field. That is why I asked Mª Carmen Díaz Ruiz to give us some advice on this topic., both as a professional and as a mother.
Carmen is a Certified Naturopath, Diploma Nutritionist and Chiromassage Therapist. He develops his professional activity at the Centro Belleza y Salud situation in Madrid.
I leave her!
I start from the basis that nutrition and, therefore, nutrition should be taught in school.
If we lay the foundations for good nutrition from the time we are children, the same thing would happen as with all the other subjects taught to us as children.. If the foundation is good, what we “put” on top will later be supported by much better foundations.. If we know how to eat well, we will avoid, and we will even solve, many possible problems.
Most schools and daycares prepare very complete menus for our children, but, We must always make sure of this and, of course, whether our children eat it or not. The ideal would be for them to eat at home and then we would know what they eat and how it is prepared., but we know that this is often impossible because, our pace of life prevents us from doing so.
Taking into account that on many occasions we cannot prevent our little ones from eating at school, you have to try to compensate and balance your diet. How? I leave you some simple tricks.
- Try to give at dinner the foods that, we know, do not give them in food or do not repeat them.
- If children eat very early, they should be given a snack when they leave school. so that they do not come to dinner hungry and devour it or, let the opposite happen: If your stomach is empty for many hours, eventually hunger will disappear.. A piece of fruit or a small “old-fashioned” sandwich is enough.
- Have to avoid, as far as possible, give the child sweets or bags during those hours of waiting (chips, little worms, etc.) that the only thing they do is leave them hungry and dirty their stomachs at the very least.. Nothing happens because they eat it at specific times, but always being clear that it will not interfere with their diet.
- Be careful with sugar! Closely related to the previous point is this. There is a lot of talk about the addiction that sugar generates, and how it affects children's behavior. I don't want to get into this too much because it would be a topic for a single article., but I do want to make a note. Sugar consumption generates the need for more sugar. Further, The consumption of such “tasty” products makes children lose interest in “less succulent” foods such as fruits and vegetables.. Y, of course, a fact that we all know perfectly. Sugar is a source of energy, but when we go too far or our children go too far, this sugar turns into fat, that is stored in the body of our children and can lead to childhood obesity.
- Dinner should be made by the whole family together at an early hour., as the child grows. At first, If we talk about children between 3-5 years old, maybe they need to have dinner before and, therefore, alone or with their siblings, because their sleep needs are different and the ideal would be that at the latest at 21.00 P.M they were sleeping. As they grow, dinners should be done as a “family” and following a healthy and balanced eating pattern.. Children learn by imitation and copy what their elders do.. We cannot expect our children to eat vegetables and salads if we do not do so..
- The ideal, is that they eat fruit instead of elaborate desserts.
- Y, of course, the The atmosphere during the dinners and meals you have together should be pleasant and calm., dedicating the time and attention that our children need. Further, It is a good time for you to tell us how your day has been and what you have learned new today.. Try not to make dinner an extension of the day (rush, nerves, etc.) if not a parenthesis. We will dine better, We will feed ourselves more and we will be “happier”.
- Remember that “What” we eat is just as important as “how” we eat it.. And if not, check it out yourself 😉
I hope that these tips that Carmen leaves us help you a lot with your little ones.. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to comment on the post..
Thanks for being there!
