Last week I had the opportunity to attend a dinner with interesting people. It was a dinner pecking in which we share our professional experience, our projects and exchanged views and opinions on other projects.

A topic that "we discussed" was the use of new technologies in education. You know that to me is a subject close to my heart, because it is directly related to what we do in iKidz.

My point of view: technologies in education are useful but alone are not effective. Why?

I've always been a person of intermediate points, and education is no less. Undoubtedly technologies are very effective. Children are attracted to everything related to a mobile or tablet, but the role of the teacher in the teaching-learning process is also essential. If we simply limit ourselves to give the child the device and play, possibly the use they make of these will not be the most appropriate. We must educate them and guide them to take advantage of technologies to the maximum.

Technologies, advantages and data:

  • It has been shown that impact of technology is higher or lower depending on the subject. Skills such as reading and writing, for example, the impact of ICT is considerable.
  • ICT are very useful to work diversity. Therefore we offer a fabulous opportunity to personalize the learning process.
  • Motivate students. Don Tapscott, author "Growing up in the digital age", states that "Mobile generation is growing up surrounded by bits and their brains are, in fact, different ". This means that they feel much more attracted and motivated by the contents presented through new technologies.
  • Presented attractively content. Often it is not a question of what we are teaching, but how we are teaching. In fact it has been shown that a student interacts with the much faster learning content if you are simply exposed to them passively.
  • In 2006, E-learning Nordic He conducted a study on how to affect ICT in education and how they acted on the role of students. This study concluded that ICTs have a very positive impact on all groups, are of age who are, improving learning.

Once we have seen the main advantages of technologies, we must also have an important point. simply giving children a tablet or computer, We will not be able to improve the learning process. In fact there are numerous studies showing that public schools simply give each child a computer is not effective. You can read more about this in this article.

How can teachers make the most of technologies?

In iKidz technologies play a fundamental role, but the role of teachers is essential for them to function effectively.

  • Technologies help us work diversity. Although classes are maximum iKidz 8 students, technologies help us work with customized each. Mainly, because thanks to ICT we can tailor the teaching to them and their needs. But the teacher's role is essential in determining what activities and resources are best suited to each of their students.
  • Activities "unlimited". Thanks to technology we have at our fingertips an unlimited number of activities, for all ages and concepts. But in this respect the teacher's role remains crucial if we are to adequately determine what activities work and how students.
  • Empathy and motivation. As mentioned above technologies have the potential to motivate our students. But there are personal skills such as empathy that only a teacher can pass on to their students. Empathize with our students and motivate them is essential if we are to learn effectively.

In conclusion, I personally would say that the technologies themselves are effective in education and, of course, that can help improve processes and the quality of learning, but always behind them must be a teacher to determine how such use is occurring and whether we are meeting the learning objectives we have decided for our students. On the contrary, we will find a classroom at the latest in terms of technology, but which they are not producing significant learning. What do you think you?

Thanks for being there!
